after Gertrude


This morning I read Anderson’s The Fir Tree which reminded me of The Story of the First Christmas Tree illustrated by one of my early influences, Gertrude Elliott Espenschied. Decided that next best move for me is to slow down considerably and do some copying.

Here’s the initial graphite sketch of part of an ensemble scene. Imagine my dismay when, after setting up new scanner, I discovered that the scanning bed is no larger than my old printer. Deep sign. Still have to deal with the gutter shadows and greyish “whites”. I was so hoping to be able to work much larger. Ah, well…
